Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. Boland enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard from Madison, Wisconsin and served on active duty for thirty years. Upon his retirement from the military at the rank of colonel, he served as the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs from 1992 until 2003. He resides in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
